Reimagining Rockwood Mall – Shaping the Future of Our Community

The City of Mississauga has completed an important planning study called Reimagining the Mall, which sets a new vision for the redevelopment of six mall-based nodes across the city—including Rockwood Mall in Ward 3.

This initiative recognizes that traditional malls are changing, and that their surrounding communities need spaces that are vibrant, walkable, and connected. The policies approved by Council in 2020 update the City’s Official Plan and provide a framework for how these sites can evolve in the coming decades.

What Does This Mean for Rockwood Village

Rockwood Mall is now formally identified as a Community Node, a focal point of our neighbourhood. The new policies encourage mixed-use development that integrates housing, retail, green space, and community amenities. Future redevelopment proposals will need to meet important requirements, such as:

• Housing diversity: Including affordable housing to meet community needs.

• Sustainable design: Ensuring new projects meet high environmental standards.

• Block size and walkability: Creating a pedestrian-friendly layout with smaller blocks and improved connections.

• Master planning: Large redevelopment proposals must submit comprehensive plans to show how all elements will fit together over time.

Why It Matters

For residents, these changes aim to strike a balance: protecting Rockwood’s role as a shopping and community hub, while also guiding growth so that it supports livability and long-term prosperity.

City Planning staff have already begun applying these policies to development applications in our ward. While each project will go through its own review and public consultation, the broader framework ensures that redevelopment will align with the community’s needs and expectations.
